About the Artist
I’m Willow Covey, a Los Angeles-based makeup artist originally from Austin, TX. I grew up in a very artistic family, expressing yourself through art came in many mediums. My journey into the world of makeup began early, sparked by a lifelong love of whimsical films like Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal and Mike Myers’s Cat in the Hat, which my parents introduced me to at a young age. Watching Face Off on Syfy and seeing my father airbrushing for our theater company deepened my passion for transformative movie makeup. Though I grew up performing on stage, I often shadowed my dad, helping with design and stepping in when he couldn’t be there. This led to my first major role as makeup department head for the district-wide production of The Little Mermaid the summer before high school.
To stay on track with my passion, I attended cosmetology school in the mornings during high school, gaining valuable skills in hair, skin, and nails, along with human anatomy. After graduating and earning my cosmetology license, I moved to Los Angeles to attend Cinema Makeup School, where I completed the Complete Track. This program allowed me to refine my technical skills, learn lab techniques, and start to build important industry connections.
Now licensed in Texas and California, I’ve worked on a diverse range of projects, including film, television, music videos, print, live theater, and working in the lab. I’m known for my versatility in disciplines and meticulous attention to detail. I often try to incorporate macabre and emotional elements into my art to tell a story with my work.
Whether it’s hair styling, glam, gore, or creating creatures, I’m dedicated to making each person feel beautifully extraordinary.
Diving Into a Look
I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Cinema Makeup School before I graduated to be a part of the Fresh Faces of the school. Watch my interview below on how I put together my Jessica Rabbit recreation for the first time in the lab.
